| The following is adapted from What Your Doctor May NOT Tell You About Knee Pain and Surgery, Warner Books, 2002.
Four Ligaments of the Knee
- MCL (most commonly injured)
- ACL (commonly injured)
- PCL (rarely injured)
- LCL (rarely injured)
A ligament is a sophisticated, biological rope connecting two bones. Some joints are quite solid (“stable”), and the ligaments are somewhat expendable. The knee and shoulder are at the other extreme. The knee can be likened to two large knobs resting on a flat surface. Without ligaments, this structure would be completely unstable.
